The Mount Marapi volcano erupted again on Wednesday, spewing an ash cloud in Indonesia.

Footage shows the ash plume rising, with the volcano itself obscured by thick clouds in West Sumatra on September 17, around 11:50 am local time.

Authorities recorded a blast with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimetres and a duration of 49 seconds.

Teguh Purnomo, an officer at the Mount Marapi Monitoring Post, said: 'Mount Marapi is currently at Level II, or alert. The public is prohibited from carrying out activities within a three-kilometre radius of the crater.'

The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) also warned of the potential threat from cold lava flows.

Residents living along rivers originating from the peak of Mount Marapi have been urged to remain vigilant.

Mount Marapi is an active stratovolcano located in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Standing at around 9,485ft, it is one of the most active volcanoes on the island and frequently erupts with ash and lava. Its activity poses ongoing risks to nearby communities, including ashfall and cold lava flows.

Marapi is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
