Watch this tiger take on a pumpkin for Halloween
Watch this adorable tiger take on a pumpkin.
Frances is a seven-year-old Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) living at the Nashville Zoo in Tennessee.
In the video, Frances can be seen investigating a carved pumpkin she was given as part of her enrichment.
She tries to pick it up by the stem, managing to get only the top of the pumpkin.
She then jumps back and runs off excitedly with the jack-o-lantern’s top, leaving the rest of the pumpkin behind.
Native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, Sumatran tigers can live between 10-15 years in the wild, and up to 20 years in captivity.
The smallest surviving tiger subspecies, with less than 400 left in the wild, they are listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.
“Populations of Sumatran tigers have fallen by 60% in the last 35 years due to poaching and habitat loss,” according to Nashville Zoo’s website.
“Much of the poaching is because some people believe they can capture a tiger’s power by stripping its skin or consuming its bones. This creates a market for illegal tiger parts trading.
“Tigers have lost more than 90% of their range over the past 100 years. If the destruction continues, all tigers could become extinct.”
The video was shot by guest, Michelle Wolfe, Halloween season 2020.
