A Thai street food vendor selling grilled sticky rice reportedly uses up 50kg of glutinous rice daily as locals flock to buy the delicacy, which is a popular snack during Thailand’s cooler season.

Video shows customers queuing up in front of the Khao Jee Ngern Lan stall early in the morning to buy the crispy sticky rice cakes in Khon Kaen province.

The treats are believed to be the region’s most popular street food during the country’s cool season as they can be eaten fresh from the grill and are also cheap.

Street vendor Nikhom Chansichao said that the sales of the grilled sticky rice have recently increased because of the chilly weather, adding that the food would get sold out the moment he opens his stall.

He said: ‘I have been running this stall for 10 years and I notice people buying more when it’s cold. I have to wake up as early as 1 AM to start cooking 50 kilograms of sticky rice and make it ready for sale at 6 AM.

‘I see customers waiting even before I set up the stall. I used to make 5,000 to 6,000 THB (about 111 to 134 GBP) per day but during this season, sometimes the earnings would reach 10,000 THB (about 223 GBP).’

The Northeastern Meteorological Center said the temperature has in Khon Kaen has recently plummeted by as much as 16 degrees Celsius, forecasting another temperature drop of 2-3 degrees in the coming days.
