A fisherman has discovered a peculiar-looking sea creature – which people on Instagram say bears a striking resemblance to the mandrake plant from Harry Potter.

A Russian fisherman has discovered a unique sea creature bearing resemblance to a mandrake - the magical plant with a piercing scream featured in Harry Potter.

Roman Fedorstov, 39, from Murmansk, Russia, compared the bizarre marine animal to the “magical and sentient” plant which is featured in the popular book franchise.

The curious creature has a large, brown slimy-looking body with an orange section towards the head.

A shape in the middle of the body resembles a face – leading to the comparison with the mandrake root which, according to lore, can scream and cause death.

Roman frequently hauls up strange marine life while out on commercial trawlers, sharing his finds with his 646,000 Instagram followers.

A video of the mandrake-lookalike was viewed more than 126,000 times and racked up more than 8,000 likes.

In the caption, Roman said: “Okay! It’s Sea Version of Mandragora!

“A Mandrake, also known as Mandragora, was a magical and sentient plant which had a root that looked like a human (like a baby when the plant is young, but maturing as the plant grows).

“When matured, its cry could be fatal to any person who heard it.”

The magical-looking creature is just one of many strange and shocking critters photographed by Roman.

Most of his finds are pulled up from the Norwegian and Barents seas in north Russia, as well as from the Atlantic.
