Awesome dragon dance wows onlookers during Chinese New Year celebrations in Bangkok, Thailand
An awesome dragon dance wowed locals celebrating the Lunar New Year in Bangkok, Thailand.
Footage taken in Yaowarat Road in the capital's Chinatown area shows performers carrying a golden dragon on poles and dancing around as fireworks were set off during the festivities on February 1.
The dragon dance has long been a part of Chinese culture, dating as far back as the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE). Traditionally performed to bring rains for watering crops, the dance has evolved to become a form of entertainment and sport, with the lucky mythical creature - symbolising power, wisdom, and wealth - as the central mascot.
Thailand’s capital city – which was founded by settlers from the Far East – has a large population of those descended from mainland China. Many moved to other provinces around the country.
Each year shops sell red and gold lanterns, firecrackers, clothes, decorations and other items to mark the annual event, which will see street celebrations have also been planned for the city.
The 2022 Chinese New Year falls on February 1, the date that marks the beginning of the new moon. Festivities typically last for 15 days until the moon becomes full.
