The Bhalswa landfill in Northern Delhi continued to burn for the sixth straight day on Sunday (May 1).

The stunning drone footage shows that smoke and small fires can still be seen in the landfill area and there are now growing concerns over health dangers for the communities living near the site.

Fire services have not been able put out the fire that started at Bhalswa landfill on Tuesday.

The cause of the fire is still unclear but it's thought to be linked to the country's current intense heatwave.

As per the visuals, smoke and small fires are still seen in the landfill area. Fire fighting operations are still going on to douse the blaze that broke out in Delhi's Bhalswa landfill site earlier this week. Although the massive fire has been controlled to an extent, some areas of the Bhalswa landfill site are still burning. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

While Delhiites struggle to breathe due to the toxic and polluted air, politics has erupted over the matter. Meanwhile, locals have started to report breathing problems in the area due to the toxic smoke emanating from the burning of untreated garbage at the landfill. Prolonged exposure to such toxic smoke, especially for children and the elderly, can severely damage the lungs and result in terminal illnesses.

Authorities suspect the rising temperatures lead to the formation of the "extremely flammable" methane gas at dumping yards. The wet waste dumped in a landfill produces methane when it rots. In hot weather conditions, methane catches fire spontaneously and the blaze spreads as it feeds on combustible material such as textiles and plastics.
