A mother Polar Bear relaxing on mossy rocks with her curious Cub
One of the best places to see Polar Bears (Ursus maritimus) is in the Norwegian Arctic in the Svalbard Archipelago. Female Polar Bears with cubs avoid contact with male bears that might kill their offspring. This female Polar Bear was loafing on mossy rocks in Virgohamna (Virgo Bay) on Danskøya with her cub who sheltered behind her, watching the tourists from the safety of Zodiacs just offshore. The female Bear was relaxed – Polar Bears are not hunted in Svalbard and see plenty of tourists.
