Thai hotel cuts rates for tourists seeking shelter from Ukraine-Russia conflict
A hotel in Thailand helps shelter tourists displaced by the Ukraine-Russia conflict by offering discounted rooms.
The four-star Kala Hotel, on the island of Koh Samui, opened its doors to both Ukrainian and Russian nationals, who are allowed to stay for only 200 THB (about 4.7 GBP) each night.
Villagers living nearby also pitched in, showing their hospitality by giving the tourists fruit and vegetables to eat.
Chayapol Inthonesupa, Koh Samui district council chief, said there were 70 foreigners - mostly Ukrainian women and children - lodging at the hotel and working online. He added that there haven't been any problems as they looked out for each other.
Saowanee Samruam, housekeeper of the hotel, said: 'The Ukrainian tourists staying in the hotel are lovely. They live a simple life without causing problems for us. Most of them like to eat fruit.'
Chayapol thanked hotel owner Supachai Phongchababnapha for his part in making the holiday makers feel at home in Thailand. He said: 'Helping the tourists creates a good tourism image for Koh Samui. They said they will remember the kindness they have been shown.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine’s Donbas region late February. He said in a public address on February 24: ‘We decided to launch a special military action aimed at demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine.’
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said more than six million refugees have left Ukraine as of May 11.
