A school of bannerfish devoured a squid's egg sac off the coast of the Philippines.

Footage captured in November 2019 shows the school swarming the translucent tube containing thousands of squid eggs.

The filmer told Newsflare: "While scuba diving off the northeast coast of Cebu Island in the Philippines, I chanced upon this active school of bannerfish.

"As I got closer, I realized that the object of their attention was a giant gelatinous translucent tube, at least six feet long and nearly a foot wide.

"This was an egg mass of the diamond-shaped squid, containing tens of thousands of eggs. The bannerfish were engaged in a feeding frenzy, gorging themselves on the helpless squid embryos.

"Thankfully, many embryos survived the brutal attack. Exactly two must hatch and attain adulthood to maintain the balance of nature."

This was an egg mass of the Diamond-shaped squid (Thysanotheuthis rhombus), containing tens of thousands of eggs. The Bannerfish were engaged in a feeding frenzy, gorging themselves on the helpless squid embryos.
