So you thought your local roads were bad? Drone footage reveals GIANT potholes in Indian highway
Could this be the world's worst road?
Drone footage from eastern India shows a chain of giant, water-filled potholes along a thoroughfare near Madhubani in Bihar state.
According to the filmer, 110 of the enormous holes stretch for 20 kilometres along national highway 227.
To make matters worse, the potholes fill with water after rain, forcing drivers to skirt around them or risk flooding their engines.
According to local journalist Praveen Kumar Thakur, the terrible state of the road is due to mismanagement.
“The road work has been kicked around from one government agency to another. As many as four contractors abandoned the work citing various reasons such as non payment of dues, unprofitable rates and inflation. It is colossal mismanagement,” he said.
Thakur has been reporting on the state of the road for many years.
Recently, he took a photo from the terrace of a house and was taken aback by the visuals.
On June 20 he decided to fly a drone to capture more detailed footage with the potholes filled with rainwater.
“That is when the road becomes impossible to use. I knew that I would get dramatic footage, but what I saw in the film was mind-blowing,” he said.
In response to his footage, a government minister has suspended four engineers and promised to fix the road urgently.
“The repair work has started but has a long way to go. At least eight kilometres of the stretch are still languishing,” said Thakur.
