Abandoned baby boy dumped next to trash bin rescued by grandmother in Thailand
An abandoned baby boy dumped next to a rubbish bin was rescued by a grandmother in Thailand.
The newborn was hidden behind trash bags before an old woman spotted his tiny feet poking out while separating bottles in Chonburi province on September 11.
The boy, reportedly born under 24 hours earlier, had been crying non-stop all night. However, the pensioner thought the sound was coming from the neighbours, so she ignored it until she saw the infant in the morning when she took out her trash.
Footage shows the baby being cleaned off by medics before an ambulance took him to a clinic. He was covered in insect bites and small cuts but was in stable condition upon a health check.
The woman who found him, Somjit Inchai, 70, said: ‘I heard actually heard the child crying at night, but I came outside and saw nothing unusual so I thought the baby was from a neighbour. But when the morning came and I threw out some plastic bottles and I saw a baby's leg.'
The old woman added she was nervous upon seeing the small feet among the trash but felt relieved when he cried and moved.
She said: ‘I felt so sorry for the baby. He must have been so exhausted being there without food all night.'
The rescue team took the baby to a local hospital, where they cleaned out blood stains, amniotic fluid and placenta wrapped around him.
He was also given new clothing while the old towel wrapped around the baby was saved for the investigation.
Medics gave him a health check-up before sending him to a bigger hospital where social workers would care for him.
Dr Kanlaya Phromniyom from the Hua Khue Sub-District Public Health Hospital said: 'He is in good health and born not more than 24 hours with fresh blood stains and amniotic fluid.'
Police said they are yet to identify the baby's mother, found in the industrial area where several migrant workers live in dorms. Nearby hospitals and clinics were being checked for records while a DNA test would be conducted to find the mother.
Under Thai laws, child abandonment is punishable by imprisonment of up to three years and fines of up to 6,000 baht (140 GBP).
