A dairy farmer was "shocked" after she found a seal in her field more than 20 miles (35km) from the nearest beach – leaving her cows very confused.

Karli McGee, 29, was doing her rounds on her farm in Simpson, Victoria, Australia, on August 14 when she spotted an unexpected visitor.

Bizarre footage shows the marine mammal frolicking on McGee's luscious green fields, far from its usual habitat.

As she panned to one side, her herd of cows looked most bemused by their guest, with some looking at the Australian fur seal while others looked at McGee, apparently looking for an explanation.

The farmer said: “We were all in complete shock. The cows were very unsure and confused. They really didn’t know what to think of their unexpected guest.

“I couldn’t get the cows out of the paddock as they wouldn’t leave the seal alone, so I had to get help from my Dad next door.

"We went in the tractor down to the paddock and first thought it was a pig. When it got up and started moving, we saw it was definitely not a pig, it was a seal.

“The seal has come up the creeks from the ocean over 30kms away.

“The seal travelled three to four kilometres inland and was seen by Melbourne Zoo. After a thorough examination, it was found to have multiple health issues and was quite old the seal was euthanised.

“I’ve been a dairy farmer for six years and lived on farms most of my life, but I’ve never seen anything like this before.”
