A beach is covered in fossilised algae that looks just like popcorn.

El Hierro Beach on the island of Fuerteventura, Spain, has become an online sensation due to its unusual covering.

The small clumps on white ‘popcorn’ that are scattered all over the shore are in fact rhodoliths, a mix of calcareous algae and white sand.

Due to being so Instagram-worthy, signs have appeared on the beach asking that people not take the rhodoliths with them as they are an integral part of the habitat.
