Bangkok ranks second best city in the world for digital nomads
Bangkok has been rated the second best city in the world to work as a digital nomad.
Eighty locations were ranked by Instant Offices according to their affordability, weather, broadband speed, scenery and transport - with Lisbon in Portugal coming top.
Analysts believe there are some 35 million digital nomads - a type of remote freelancer who does online work - worldwide, with most staying in one location for around three to nine months before travelling elsewhere.
Many governments, such as in Bali, Indonesia, are now providing visas to accommodate this criterion of travellers.
Of all the criteria, Bangkok topped the category for the cheapest accommodation, with rooms rented for as little as 5,000 Baht a month (120 GBP).
Japanese tourist and freelancer Ikuko Anita Ni, 34, said Thailand was one of her favourite countries.
She said: ‘I've been here twice already since I am doing work as a digital nomad. I went to experience living here and work as well. I do mostly localization and online marketing which means that I translate websites or apps for a company or individual. And marketing for online ads and stuff like that.'
The digital nomad added she liked the freedom to choose the place where she can be.
She said: ‘I think I like the freedom to travel and work at the same time. I don't have to be at one place for a long time. I can be in the cafe or on the beach. Anything is possible.'
Ikuko said they were informed of a special visa that they could acquire in Thailand specially for their line of work.
She said: ‘I've only been here for two weeks. I am aware that they have visa for freelancer or digital nomad.'
In the future, she plans on coming to other parts of Thailand after enjoying Bangkok.
She said: ‘I'll go to Chiang Mai or the south. I can go to Cambodia or Laos. I don't have a plan yet, I'll just see what happens.'
