This lioness was cleaning herself very thoroughly after a meal that she had had. Lion tongues are covered in tiny backward-facing spines called papillae making them as rough as sandpaper. These spines help with grooming however if they scrape human skin, they can draw blood too. Their spiky tongues are also used to tenderise their meat they eat!
