We saw these cheetahs in Maasai Mara marking a tree with urine. Scent marking allows cheetahs and other carnivores to communicate with each other by leaving their scent at prominent landmarks such as termite mounds and large trees in savannah ecosystems. These carnivores often return to the same trees time and time again. We often wait for them on game drives near trees, knowing that they will approach a tree to scent-mark it.
