A hapless stray cat was rescued after it was skewered on a resident's fence spikes in Thailand.

The gray tabby had been hunting mice at night but impaled itself on the sharp metal when it leapt from the window awning of a two-storey home in Tak province.

It was heard meowing miserably for some six hours before being discovered by villagers on May 29 morning, the 2ft blood-stained barb piercing gruesomely through its hip.

The locals called animal rescuers and firefighters for help as the cat's injury was severe.

Footage shows the officers using a metal cutter to detach the entire spike from the concrete fence.

The frightened one-year-old moggie yowled in pain as it puffed up its tail and took a swipe at its rescuers.

They held it by the back of its neck to keep it still while applying gauze on its wound.

Residents believe the feline was on the prowl for rodents but was spooked by dogs' barking, causing it to jump in fright from the building onto the fence.

The cat was rushed to a veterinarian, and the spike was successfully removed.

Doctors said they will monitor the stray's condition because the spike was rusty. They will put it up for adoption once it has recovered.
