Indonesian security authorities from the Water and Air Police Corps have succeeded in uncovering a trafficking network of Endemic Animals in a village in Indonesia.

The disclosure of this endemic animal trade network from Papua was found in Kalobo village, Raja Ampat Regency, West Papua Province on 22 September 2022.

From this disclosure, the Indonesian security authorities managed to secure at least sixteen endemic animals from Papua that were protected, including fifteen black-headed musk birds and black parrots. The police also managed to apprehend a perpetrator who is a smuggler of the protected endemic animal.

Dozens of endemic animals are planned to be smuggled to other areas in Indonesia and abroad. Where the promising market price makes the perpetrators of the endemic animal smuggling syndicate desperate to hunt the endemic animal to the forests in the area.

After successfully securing all the evidence including a smuggler, they were immediately taken to the Water and Air Police Corps Headquarters, West Papua Regional Police for further data collection and examination.

Meanwhile, for the sixteen endemic animals that were successfully secured, they were immediately handed over to the Natural Resources Conservation Center of West Papua Province to be released into the wild.

Desianti Nababan, Head of the Forestry Police of the Center for Conservation and Natural Resources of West Papua Province, said that the Provinces of Papua and West Papua are fertile fields for the perpetrators of smuggling these endemic animals. With a fairly high price when endemic animals are sold, the perpetrators are desperate to hunt for endemic animals in the forests of Papua.

The evidence that was secured by the Indonesian security authorities was then handed over to the Center for Conservation and Natural Resources for further examination of the health conditions of all endemic animals.

After that, according to Desianti, these endemic animals will be released into the forest area of Papua.

Until now, one perpetrator of the smuggling of endemic animals from Papua is still being investigated intensively by the Law Enforcement Sub-Directorate of the Water and Air Police Corps of the West Papua Police.

Efforts to prevent the smuggling of protected animals in the territory of Indonesia are of particular concern to the relevant technical agencies and law enforcement agencies in Indonesia. This is expected to be able to break the chain of syndicates of perpetrators of smuggling protected animals to be traded outside the territory of the province of West Papua to abroad.

Even law enforcement officers provide strict sanctions against the perpetrators according to the rules and laws that exist in the territory of Indonesia.
