This is the dramatic moment a tree that was washed away by floods crashed into a electricity lines causing an explosion in Thailand.

The branches were floating downstream in the muddy torrents when they hit the concrete bridge and touched the high-voltage lines placed overhead.

Terrified onlookers fled as a ball of sparks erupted with a bang. The tree then dragged down a second set of power lines as it disappeared under the structure.

Resident Sumitra quickly stopped recording on her phone and ran for cover following the scary incident during torrential weather in Lamphun province on October 3.

She said: 'It was scary. Homes have been left without power.'

Heavy rain has been battering large parts of Thailand for the last three months. The torrential weather was compounded by Typhoon Noru, which brought severe deluges to the northeast region causing floods and overflowing rivers.

Typhoon Noru made landfall in Vietnam last Wednesday and weakened to a tropical depression as it moved into Thailand on Thursday, September 29.

One person in Thailand's Sisaket province died when powerful winds knocked a tree onto a pickup truck, injuring two others inside. While in the Philippines, where Noru first struck, at least 10 people were killed and an estimated 50,000 displaced by the severe weather.
