Massive brawl erupts during high school football game in Ohio
A mass brawl involving a shovel broke out at the end of a high school football game in Ohio on Friday (October 14).
Eyewitness video shows players from Utica and visiting side Northridge Vikings coming to blows and chaos ensuing after a game in the Licking County League-Cardinal Division.
"Following a tense American Football Game at Utica High School in Utica, a fight broke out between the players which stemmed from, of all things, a shovel," Newsflare's filmer said.
"I interviewed several people following the incident and believe the following is the story behind the events: Witnesses stated that the visiting team's (Northridge) coaching staff brought a shovel into the stadium with pre-game warmups.
"Several witnesses stated that the coach (or one of the coaching staff) was visibly holding the shovel while Senior Night activities were ongoing and the Northridge team was warming up.
"It was surmised that the idea behind it was that 'we're going to bury you' or some other type of intimidation tactics sports teams and fans often use to hype up prior to games.
"The game was a close one and near the end there was some pushing and shoving between players on the field.
The home team (Utica) won the game 28 to 14 and started making their way to the victory bell. Witnesses stated that one of the Northridge players was either holding the shovel and/or digging a hole in the field with the shovel somewhere near the victory bell.
"Witnesses stated that a Utica player forcefully took the shovel from the Northridge player and walked away. However, video footage from other sources indicates that the Northridge player was carrying the shovel in the post-game handshake and a Utica player forcefully took the shovel from the Northridge player and proceeded to the victory bell. This is the point where the video starts to capture.
"The Northridge player then forcefully recaptures the shovel from the Utica player and the chaos ensues."
