A stealthy Komodo dragon leapt 2 metres into the air to grab a bat from a tree branch right in front of a photographer.

Ranger Konstantinus Muga was on the island of Komodo, Indonesia, on October 8 when one of the island's famous reptiles started crawling towards him in the undergrowth.

Incredible footage taken from just 3 metres away, shows the killer lizard calmly strolling across the ground before leaping into the air and trying to grab a fruit bat from a tree.

After several attempts, the Komodo dragon finally managed to clamp its deadly jaws around its prey, before thrashing its head side to side before swallowing its meal.

Konstantinus said: “I have been a ranger for six years and this was my first time seeing a Komodo dragon hunt a bat.

“It was such an amazing feeling to get to see it up close as it’s so rare.

“They were just three metres in front of me when all of this happened.

“The lizard saw the bat about 2 metres off the ground and was intent on eating it.

“It tried several times to catch it but failed. Eventually, it grabbed it off the branch and ate it right in front of me.”
