Male Kestrel Defies Textbooks To Care For 1-Week-Old Chicks After His Mate Goes Missing

Wildlife artist and filmmaker, Robert E Fuller, has a network of over 100 remote cameras he uses to watch the secret lives of wildlife around his home in the Yorkshire Wolds. A kestrel pair, Mr & Mrs Kes, are caring for six 1-week-old chicks. The male kestrel provides for the brood, bringing food to the nest around the clock. The female defends the chicks and feeds them, tearing prey items into small pieces they can swallow. When his mate disappeared out of the blue, Mr Kes must defy the textbooks if the chicks are going to survive. While the male is in charge of provisioning food, he has no idea how to care for the chicks. When the chicks haven't been fed for over 12 hours, Robert intervenes, taking the chicks for a health check. Three of the six chicks are looking small and weak, and stay in with Robert for further care. But in a bid to keep the chicks wild, Robert puts the stronger three back in the nest, hoping for the return of the female. She never returns, but over the following days, Mr Kes defies the odds and learns to brood, care for and even tid-bit feed the tiny chicks. Now, it looks like the chicks have a fighting chance of survival.
