A German tourist and his Thai girlfriend were arrested after allegedly hoarding guns, bullets, and drugs in their house.

Mateas, 39, and his companion Rak, 44, were arrested at their home in the Patong sub-district of Phuket, Thailand, on November 11.

The couple had been accused of threatening other foreigners by sending firearms pictures to them through the LINE messaging application to demand money.

Officers seized from them an unregistered handgun, 16 bullets, a long-barreled gun and gun frame, 12.3 grams of gunpowder, 0.8 grams of crystal meth, and two sets of drug paraphernalia.

Patong Police Chief Colonel Suchin Nilabadee said: ‘The foreign man said that he had been with Mrs. Rak for 10 years. He claimed to have purchased the guns from a friend named Boy - who is now dead - for 20,000 THB about 4 to 5 years ago. The drugs were bought from another friend for personal consumption.'

The couple are now facing charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and illegal possession of a Category 1 drug.

Mateas was also charged for overstaying his tourist visa in the country, but police did not specify for how long.

The pair have been detained at the Patong police station while officers negotiate a punishment.
