Police chase after truck 'carrying illegal migrant workers' in Thailand
Highway police chased down a pickup truck that was allegedly carrying illegal migrant workers in Thailand.
Patrol officers gave chase after seeing the suspicious vehicle driving down the road without a license plate in Ayutthaya province on November 16.
Despite the enforcers flashing red lights, the truck driver paid no heed and only sped up even more trying to escape.
The pickup raced into a university area, bursting through the campus gates while belching out black smoke.
University security guard Lance Corporal Sukhum Pinket, 56, said: ‘I was standing in front of the university entrance when the guard at another gate contacted me about the pickup truck speeding through the university area.
'I shut the gate and within around two minutes, the pickup truck came running fast and bashed through. Luckily, the driver did not run into me and the university gate was only slightly damaged.'
Police finally caught up with the vehicle when it was caught in a traffic jam near the Rojana Industrial Estate road.
The cops found three Thai nationals at the scene. They were the driver Chaiwat Putong, 30, Petcharee Benmat, 26, and Kokhot Phuthong, 26.
Also inside the truck were three Burmese nationals, one of whom did not have a valid passport.
Chaiwat claimed: ‘A Thai man contacted me at noon and asked me to pick up the three immigrants and drop them in Chiang Mai province. The man said that I'd be paid 12,000 THB and the amount would be divided with the other Thais that came with me.'
Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanasak Prasatthong said: ‘The arresting officer filed allegations against Chaiwat Puthong, Kokhot Phuthong, and Petcharee Benmat for together being aware of and harboring illegal foreigners entering the kingdom in violation of the law.
'They were also charged for using radio communication equipment without permission from the licensing officer.
'One male alien was also arrested for entering and staying in the kingdom without permission. The man will be delivered to the Asian Highway Patrol service for recording and then sent to the investigators of Uthai Police Station in Ayutthaya province to continue with legal proceedings.'
