A drunk-driving monk was arrested in a purple supercar following a police chase in Thailand.

Phra Anipphalo, 34, reportedly stole a Nissan pickup from a devotee who went to pray at a temple in Mae Sot province on November 16.

He drove 20km away like a high-speed racer as cops struggled to catch up. He stole a second car outside a shop and switched to the purple Hyundai.

The pursuit continued until he reached in front of Mae Sot Hospital, where he was caught in heavy traffic before officers arrested him.

Footage shows the police with long hooks handcuffing the monk and taking him away from the purple supercar.

Mae Sot Police Station Police Colonel Monsak Kaewon said: ‘We mobilised patrol officers to chase the monk but he was very fast.

‘Our officers coordinated with checkpoints around the province and the border patrols to stay alert.'

The monk was caught in front of the hospital near a school. Heavy traffic built up in the area due to students coming home from classes which slowed the monk down.

Police Colonel Monsak said: 'He would remain at the police station during investigation. He also underwent a drugs test.'
