Airline cabin crew were caught smuggling onions into the Philippines as prices of the vegetable soar.

At least 10 Philippine Airlines staff flying in from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, tried to sneak the undeclared produce into the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on January 10.

X-ray scans revealed 15.5 kilograms of onions, 4.5 kilograms of lemons, and one kilogram of strawberries and blueberries stuffed in bags as they went through the customs lane.

The agricultural products were confiscated by the Bureau of Customs, which recommended that 'appropriate legal action' be taken against the staff.

The price of onions - dubbed the 'new gold' in the Philippines - has soared to almost 11 USD per kilogram.

The Philippine Department of Agriculture has blamed the skyrocketing cost on 'smugglers and cartels' involved in hoarding and price gouging.
