Endangered Yangtze finless porpoise seen spouting in eastern China
An endangered Yangtze finless porpoise was spotted spouting water while swimming on its back in eastern China.
The cute moment was filmed in the city of Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province on February 26.
According to Ma Jianjun, an assistant to the president of the Yangzhou Finless Porpoise Conservation Association, this porpoise was particularly active and different from what they normally see.
According to experts, there are two reasons why finless porpoises spit water. One is that the porpoises play to entertain themselves and the other reason is that they spit water columns at small fish jumping out of the water to drive them away and facilitate their own hunting.
The Yangtze finless porpoises are critically endangered as there are less than 2,000 remaining, of which 100 live in semi-natural reserves, according to WWF.
