A heatwave has killed millions of fish in the town of Menindee, New South Wales, Australia.

Lox oxygen levels are believed to be the cause of these sudden deaths on the Darling River. In fact, temperatures as high as 40C (104F) were recorded on the weekend of March 18 and 19.

The Australian police said that a contractor will be hired to remove the fish as residents complain about the smell and possible health risks.

The operation was described as "a logistical nightmare" by Police Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree.
