Australian tourist, 30, found dead in police cell after allegedly 'hanging himself'
An Australian tourist was found dead after allegedly hanging himself while detained at a police station in Thailand.
Matthew Michael Winder, 30, was arrested for allegedly yelling and disturbing hotel guests while drunk at the Tropica Bungalow Hotel near Patong Beach on the holiday island Phuket.
The holidaymaker, from Belmont, Perth, was caught by officers early morning on April 24, and taken to the Patong police station, where he was placed in a small solitary confinement room to calm down.
The officers claimed they went out for lunch at around 11.30 am, but came back to the Aussie's lifeless body with the drawstring from his shorts wrapped around his neck.
They added that CCTV footage was allegedly recorded of Winder becoming increasingly agitated and frantic before reportedly taking his life.
His body has been sent to the forensics department of the Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Police have notified the Australian Embassy in Thailand to inform Winder's family of his passing and make arrangements for the repatriation of his remains.
Police Major General Sermpan Sirikhong, Phuket police chief, said: "The suspect was drunk and acting wildly when he was arrested along Bang La road in Patong. He was held alone in a room on the second floor of the Patong police station".
The officer added an investigation is underway, though it is unclear if officers independent of the Patong Police Station will be involved.
