A coconut seller has been arrested after he was allegedly caught using sewer water to clean his fruits - before selling them to the public.

Footage shows the disgusting moment the unhygienic hawker scooped up the filthy water from a nearby canal and used it to douse the stacks of coconuts on his stall near the Shree Radha Krishna Sky Garden in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Gautam Buddh Nagar district police said in a statement on June 5 that the vendor, identified as Mohd Sameer, 28, has been arrested.

Authorities said Sameer will be charged for violating section 270 of India's Penal Code regarding 'malignant acts likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life.'

The offense can be punished with a prison term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
