A ‘scaredy cat’ lion cub showed it had a long way to go before becoming king of the jungle when it ran away from a millipede and hid behind its mum.

Andrew Stephens was travelling through Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa, when he spotted a family of big cats snoozing in the shade.

Hilarious footage captured the moment one of the cubs suddenly sat bolt upright as a giant African millipede wriggled towards it before standing up out of fright.

Despite its massive size advantage, the four-month-old cub moved closer to its mum seeking safety before following the insect from a safe distance as it crawled away.

Andrew, 47, said: “We were excited to see what sort of interaction there would be between the two. We were hoping for it to perhaps paw at the bug, but sadly it was a big scaredy cat.

“The lion cub was lying next to its mum when a millipede walked up the sand bank towards it. At first the cub was unsure of millipede and moved closer to mum seeking refuge.

“The lions looked like they had fed recently and were sleeping next to a close water source. The Cub had suckled as well.

“The mum lifted her head and paw, then unknowingly placed her paw back down onto the millipede. It was trapped.

“The cub must have thought mum saved the day so investigated, but the millipede managed to free itself and crawled away from the lions.

“Eventually the cub’s curiosity got the better of it and it moved closer to inspect it while still keeping a safe distance.”
