Brixton celebrates 75th anniversary of the Windrush arrivals with beautiful model boat and parade
A model replica of the HMT Empire Windrush boat commemorated the arrival of 492 Carribean migrants who answered Britain's call to help with post-war labour shortages (June 22).
The Windrush pioneers, docked in Tilbury on the 21st June 1948 and disembarked the following day.
For many it was a bitter-sweet journey, facing discrimination and hardship in the years ahead.
The boat with realistic sounds and squirting water, was wheeled through Brixton, followed by a parade of local schoolchildren and others dressed in 40s-style clothing, celebrating the achievements and contribution to Britain, of the Windrush generation -many of whom were forces veterans.
