STORYLINE:

China is riding a wave of artificial intelligence (AI) innovation this year, unleashing its enormous potential to transform the world's second-largest economy.

The AI frenzy is evident at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2023 in Shanghai, where over 30 cutting-edge products, including deep-learning large language models and general-purpose humanoid robots, have made their global debut.

Shanghai Westwell Technology Co., Ltd., which uses AI to explore development in autonomous logistics, brought its first battery-swapping driverless vehicle to WAIC.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): CHEN LIN, Public affairs manager, Shanghai Westwell Technology Co., Ltd.
"Our tractor can be used in various freight logistics scenarios such as airports, logistics parks, factories, etc. We use it for some small-scale freight transportation, as well as our luggage transportation work."

XtalPi Inc., a pioneering pharmaceutical technology company powered by AI and automation, debuted a drug discovery automation solution at the event.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): GU LIANG, Chief technology officer, XtalPi Inc.
"The new product XtalPi brought here is its digital, intelligent and automated laboratory solutions for the pharmaceutical R&D industry, helping drug enterprises accelerate drug development, molecular synthesis, feature exploration and other processes."

Since ChatGPT took the world by storm late last year, Chinese tech giants and startups have been rushing to join the AI race by launching similar AI chatbots one after another.

More than 30 large models took the spotlight during the event, such as Huawei's Pangu, Baidu's Wenxin and SenseTime's SenseNova.

Huawei on Friday launched its Pangu Large Model 3.0 at Huawei Cloud Developer Conference. It had sub-models that serve drug development, mining and railway transport.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): Staff member at the Huawei booth
"On the basis of our Huawei Cloud model, we can combine know-how of different industries with our large models to assist businesses and various sectors in improving efficiency and reducing production costs."

The Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, together with the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Shanghai Institute of Surveying and Mapping, released a city-level 3D real-scene model, which can carry out high-precision and rapid modeling of urban real scenes within 100 square kilometers.

SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): QIAO YU, Professor, Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
"China's advantages of developing AI and large models lie in its diverse application scenarios, broad market, and a large pool of talents.
Our laboratory hopes to foster innovation within the academic community and expedite R&D for enterprises by establishing an open-source model and technical system, thereby cooperating with international partners and jointly promoting technological progress in this field and the development of the industrial ecology."
