Delhi schools closed as India's capital braces for heavy monsoon flooding
As the national capital braces for moderate to heavy rainfall on July 11, the Delhi government has granted an unexpected holiday for students in classes Nursery to 5th across all government and aided schools. This announcement came from the Directorate of Education in a circular, which noted that classes for 6th grade and above will continue as normal, with all staff expected to report.
This decision comes in the aftermath of deadly floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rains that have already claimed at least 15 lives across northern India. New Delhi, receiving a historic amount of rainfall, witnessed the most rainfall it has seen in decades, with city reports noting 153mm of precipitation in a single day - a record not seen in July for over 40 years.
The relentless downpour has caused widespread havoc across the capital. Streets were flooded, several areas reported knee-deep water, and several roads, notably in Burari, New Delhi, collapsed under the onslaught of the rain. Footage from Monday showed cars stuck in traffic due to the submerged roads and infrastructure damage.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in anticipation of continued heavy rainfall in New Delhi, indicating the possibility of further disruption and damage in the coming days. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and prioritize safety during this unprecedented monsoon season.
