Meet the professional gold digger - who hit the jackpot when she discovered gold worth $100k.

Tyler Mahoney, 27, was interested in gold digging from an early age as all of her family work in the industry.

When she turned 18, Tyler moved from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia - after having "enough" of living in a small town."

But after two years, and multiple jobs including modelling and events management, Tyler realised she missed gold mining and returned home.

She is now a fourth generation gold digger and works alongside her mum, Lecky, 55, dad, Ted, 56, and brother, Reece, 24 - catching everything from gold nuggets to rare gold fetching up to $100k.

Tyler's working hours depend on the weather and season. Throughout summer she can work from 5am to 1pm and throughout winter she can work from 6:30 to 5pm.

The family do get very competitive when it comes to searching for gold, the most expensive piece of gold Tyler has found was an ironstone lode - gold in ironstone - worth $100k.

Tyler, a gold prospector, from Kalgoorlie, Australia said: "I love prospecting because there is no stability to it."

"I could make $0 tomorrow or next week but on the other hand, I could be a millionaire by tomorrow."

"It is so addictive - the possibility that you're going to find that big nugget is really addictive - you get a constant dopamine hit."

"In Melbourne, I had a stable life with a stable job and I just realised that was not the life for me."

Tyler is forth generation gold prospector - her great grandfather, Ned, grandmother, Nola, both of her parents and her brother all worked or work in the industry.

Tyler was fascinated about gold from a young age but escaped to the city after admitting she got "had enough" of living in a small town."

After living in Melbourne for two years, Tyler returned to the gold fields of Kalgoorlie and hasn't looked back since.

Tyler said: "I get a dopamine hit every time I find a bit of gold."

"I love how I am able to work for myself, I am out in nature all the time."

"Prospecting is a dying art - there is nobody really my age that does it. "

"Having the opportunity to carry that on from my family's generation and carry the knowledge on, I really enjoy that aspect too."

Tyler has caught different types of gold when out digging with the most expensive piece of gold she found worth $100k.

At the end of the month, when the payment is calculated, the family of four will split the payment fairly between them.

Tyler said: "There is a gold price which is set in US dollar worldwide but a gold nugget has rarity to it so we often get a premium for that."

"We have owned a gold dealership for 11 years, we're lucky we have a lot of contacts."

"If I was to sell my gold to a gold dealer, I would get the spot price for it."

"If I was to sell it through my website, I am the gold dealer so I would sell for a premium."

"The Australian gold price is around $90 per gram, so I would sell my gold nugget to the public for $120 a gram because there is a premium - there is lots of layers to it, there isn't a one answer fits all."

"There is a type of gold called sponge gold, they are really are. "

"We found one of those for triple the spot price - today that is $270 a gram - something like that goes to a collector."

"The biggest nugget I found is five ounces."

"I have found an ironstone lode - the source where the gold is formed"

- we ended up ripping that out, crushing it and processing it.

"We got $100k out of gold of it."

Tyler currently lives in the gold fields of Western Australia which is rich with gold.

Gold can be easier to find there but Tyler said there is an art to gold mining which an average person would not understand.

She said: "It is a really rich area, in saying that, if an average person was to get a miner's right and go prospecting it is getting really difficult to find gold on the surface."

"The gold rush was 120 yeas ago so the area has been done so well."

"We have to use a lot of machinery to get the gold."

"There is a difference between metal detectorist and a gold prospector."

"A prospector is someone who raids the ground, knows how to get the gold and when they are finding gold knows the best way to get it out of the ground."

"We look at geology, mineralisation, we look at historic workings, there is a lot of research that is involved."
