A hiking trip went wrong when tourists were battered by winds and rain on a hilltop in Thailand.

The group were trekking up a hill at the Doi Soi Malai National Park in Tak province on August 2 when they encountered a storm during the climb.

Footage shows the hikers crouching and anchoring themselves to the ground as gale winds swept across the trail, threatening to blow them away.

Hiker Phakhayanin said: 'The trip was so brutal. I went with four of my friends during the rainy season. We hiked up the hill for around one to two kilometres when it began to rain.

'The higher we climbed, the stronger the wind became. Eventually, we were forced to stop at a path along the cliff.

'The wind was powerful, but we maintained our balance. We walked crouching on the path for 100 to 200 metres.'

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
