A strange object that shone a bright green colour captured in the night sky baffled locals in China.

Footage shows two green objects glowing in the dark sky above Wuhan, Hubei Province, in the early hours of September 2.

The lights reportedly hovered high above the ground for at least seven hours, attracting attention from many locals and netizens alike.

The person who filmed the peculiar sight said the object had neither moved nor its lights blinked for the entire time that it could be seen.

Some locals wondered if it was a real case of an extraterrestrial spaceship coming to Earth after the video was posted there.

Others speculated that it might be a weather balloon or radar equipment which are often used to monitor atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity and wind speed.

However, staff at the Wuhan Meteorological Bureau said they did not release any weather balloons on the night of the 2nd and did not receive reports of any meteorological anomalies.
