A huge wild elephant sniffed around a truck held up on a mountain road.

The jumbo blocked a passing lorry and searched around it for something to eat in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, Thailand on August 13.

Footage shows the animal's large face and flapping ears visible through the windscreen as they stopped on the isolated route.

But when the elephant seemed to have confirmed the vehicle was not carrying anything edible, it went past them and the driver slowly moved away to avoid startling the beast.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.

There have been several reports of elephants holding up traffic across Thai provinces, especially in areas where they live, such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.
