A troupe of rampaging wild monkeys caused chaos when they raided a supermarket to steal bananas on a Thai island.

The marauding primates had been foraging for food in a nearby forest before they descended on the 7-11 store selling snacks on Koh Phi Phi island in Krabi province on September 16.

Footage shows how the hungry animals raided the shop, stealing bananas from plastic crates outside and then leaping out of reach when employees tried to drive them away.

The territorial mafia-like creatures also charged at passers-by walking along the path.

Onlooker Yim said that the store was located near the monkeys' natural habitat along their usual foraging route.

He said: 'Sometimes the monkeys even try to barge into the shop when staff cannot close the entrance quickly enough. They've also plucked food right out of the hands of tourists before. Luckily, they haven't overrun the island yet.'

Thailand's growing population of primates in urban areas have become a problem as the animals are known to damage property, such as cars and buildings. Unafraid of the consequences, they have also started stealing food from tourists and locals.

Meanwhile, the Thai government is taking steps to manage the monkey population in the country including creating sanctuaries, mass sterilisation programs, educating of public on how to handle the animals properly, and relocating them to more suitable habitats.
