A wild elephant tore down a Buddhist temple wall as it roamed around looking for food.

The hungry jumbo named Plai Biang Yai had wandered out of the Khao Yai National Park and entered the Wat Mu Si temple in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand in search of dinner on September 13.

Villagers spotted him taking a stroll in temple grounds before approaching a stone fence and attempting to cross over.

Onlookers shouted as Plai Biang Yai trampled on the barrier, which collapsed under his weight.

The elephant then made his way back to the national park, leaving behind a gaping section along the fence. He was seen in the morning happily munching on some vegetation.

Residents said other wild elephants had been spotted near the community area, but only Plai Biang Yai had ventured inside the temple grounds.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
