Peg leg polly! Parrot has prosthetic leg fitted so he can hop around again
This adorable pet parrot can hop around again thanks to a prosthetic leg custom-made by a vet.
Kyle, a white-bellied caique, suffered a severe infection in his right leg when he tried to gnaw through the string that was entangling the limb.
His owner rushed him to the Amazonia Avian & Exotic Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, where exotic animal specialist Kritchai Chatcharoensuk had to perform an emergency amputation to keep the rot from spreading.
The procedure had saved Kyle's life, but left him unable to walk like he used to.
To restore the bird's mobility, determined Kritchai spent four months painstakingly designing and building an aluminium leg that could be fitted to Kyle's stump.
The bird was finally able to have it fitted successfully and immediately began walking around the clinic last Friday, September 22. The curious bird appeared to still be getting used to the prosthesis as he was seen nibbling at it with his beak, unsure of what his new leg was.
Kritchai, who often performs surgery on injured birds for free, said: 'The prosthetic leg is made with aluminium. It is fitted on, and not tied with rope so that the parrot can't remove it easily.
'It took around four months to make because we had to try out many trial prostheses before finding the right one. This will also serve as a model for future prosthetic legs for birds.
'The owner is delighted. They are so pleased that their bird can walk around naturally again without any discomfort.'
Prosthetic limbs for animals are becoming increasingly popular but it is rare to see them fitted on smaller pets, such as birds.
In 2016, a female elephant named Mosha received a prosthetic leg to replace the original limb that was blown off by landmines along the Burmese border.
While in 2022, a 31-year-old female jumbo named MaeMai had a leg fitted by a sanctuary following an accident while she was working in the logging industry in Thailand.
