Honest teen who stole salmon from supermarket by mistake divides opinion by going back to pay for it
A teenager has been praised for returning to Tesco to pay for a pack of salmon she ‘accidentally’ stole two days before.
Sophie Walters popped to her local store to pick up a £4.85 pack of the fish and some bagels.
The 19-year-old said she put the salmon in her reusable, tote bag.
She then went upstairs to find her favourite bagels.
But she couldn’t find the particular ones that she liked.
Sophie then returned downstairs and walked out without paying.
The shocked shopper said: “I completely forgot to go to the self-checkout.”
However, she didn’t realise this until 9 pm that evening (10 Sept).
In a bid to clear her conscience, Sophie insisted on returning to her local shop in Birmingham city centre and paying for her item two days later.
Sophie said: “I felt horrible for taking something without paying for it.
“Especially because salmon could be considered a ‘luxury grocery item’ and is fairly expensive.
”I am very conscious that many people do not have the luxury to buy a product like this.
”Knowing that I am in a position where I can, and had accidentally brought it home for ‘free’, was an action I could not accept.”
When the teen returned to the shop and explained the situation to the cashier, she said they were a bit confused at first.
But they appreciated her honesty and asked Sophie to get another pack of salmon so they could run the barcode through the till.
Sophie said: “She explained that not many people would have done what I did, which does disappoint me to hear.
”But it also makes me proud of the person I have become, someone who values honesty.”
Sophie said the act allowed her to “finally breathe again” and she cooked the salmon for dinner later that night.
After sharing her story in a TikTok clip, other shoppers had a mixed reaction.
Many praised Sophie for being an honest person.
One shopper, called Em, said: “How honest of you.”
Another, called Zara, joked: “Girl your Birmingham's most honest citizen.”
”She so kind-hearted to go two days later when they didn’t even know,” said another shopper.
However, some shoppers didn’t feel like it was necessary to go back.
One customer, called Rebecca said: “I've worked for big companies, corporations like Tesco.
”They don't care.”
Another person, called Edward Jollifee said: “I'd possibly do this if it was a small business but no chance for Tesco.”
Sophie added: “It was also nice to hear other people have made this mistake themselves, and that these things happen.
”Of course, there were some viewers who were unkind, and described me as a ‘bootlicker’ and ‘privileged white girl'.
"And some who thought I was dumb and stupid to support and give my money to a big corporation like Tesco when they already make a large sum of income.
”However, my urge to return the salmon stemmed much more than just simply supporting a supermarket. It was about doing the right thing.
”If you want to buy something, you should pay for it, especially if you are in a financial position to do so.”
