A pet dog sinking in thick mud fought off a monitor lizard at a swampy, dried-up river.

The pooch waded in thick sludge while playing with his furry friends when a 4ft-long reptile appeared in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province, Thailand on July 20.

Footage shows the pair of mutts wrestling with the animal, which was bigger than any of them. A third dog stood on guard while his mud-stained companions battled with the lizard.

Being outnumbered, the monitor lizard decided to leave and disappeared behind thick grass.

Asian water monitor lizards normally live in canals, swamps, sewers and ponds in cities in Thailand. They feed on fish, snakes, frogs and scraps of food left by humans.

The reptiles are aggressive when threatened and have a mildly venomous bite which sometimes carries harmful bacteria. The Godzilla-like reptiles are also a protected species in the country so their population thrives.
