A thirsty wild elephant stopped by a family's home to drink from their garden pond.

The jumbo wandered out of the forest and into the village when it found the concrete pit filled with water in Rayong province, Thailand, on May 16.

Footage shows the animal standing outside the property's fence while reaching down the pool with its trunk to cool off with a refreshing drink.

After drinking, the elephant walked to the other side of the street and ate some leaves before leaving.

Resident Ploychompu said: ‘It was the first time that an elephant went here. It was already walking around the village the night before it stopped to drink at our garden.'

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
