Black swans get trapped in frozen lake in northern China
Two black swans got trapped on a frozen lake, unable to move anything but their necks in northern China.
The video was filmed in Harbin City in Heilongjiang Province on November 7.
Witnessing students explained that the sudden drop in temperatures, common in Northeast China, had led to the swans' predicament. It was an occurrence that the locals had grown accustomed to.
One student recalled that on November 6, the lake was still free of ice, but with the plummeting nighttime temperatures, they discovered the swans encased in frozen water on November 7.
Despite their currently stable appearance, the swans had faced similar situations in previous years, suggesting their resilience to the cold.
However, concerns were rising about their prolonged exposure to the harsh conditions. A compassionate maintenance worker attempted to rescue the swans by rowing a boat to reach them, but the swans were uncooperative, plunging into the water. The worker remarked that they might need to "freeze a bit more" before attempting another rescue.
A staff member from Harbin Normal University disclosed that the relevant authorities had been notified about the stranded swans. However, due to the necessity of a certain ice thickness, they would have to wait until the ice froze to a suitable depth before initiating the rescue.
In accordance with the swans' natural habits, the university's management traditionally retrieves the swans from the lake each year when it freezes, providing them with shelter in a warm facility for the winter.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
