STORYLINE:
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the Ghorashal-Polash Urea Fertilizer Project (GPUFP), the country's largest and first-ever green fertilizer factory, at an inauguration ceremony in Narsingdi district on Sunday.
Nearly 1,000 Chinese employees from the China National Chemical Engineering & Construction Corporation Seven Ltd. (CC7), in collaboration with its Japanese partner Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), had worked round the clock since 2020 to complete the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project as scheduled.
With an estimated annual production capacity of 800,000 metric tons of granular urea and 500,000 metric tons of anhydrous ammonia, officials said the factory, located in Narsingdi district, some 51 km northeast of the capital city of Dhaka, will help Bangladesh meet the growing demand for fertilizer in its efforts to ensure food security.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Hasina said it will be Bangladesh's first fertilizer plant to capture carbon dioxide. The captured carbon dioxide will also help increase urea fertilizer production in the country by 10 percent, she added.
GPUFP project director Mohammad Rajiour Rahman Mollick told Xinhua earlier that the project will become the biggest fertilizer factory in Bangladesh as well as one of the biggest in South Asia once completed.
Mollick said that there are many projects in Bangladesh involving the Chinese government, Chinese privately-owned enterprises and Chinese business people. The Chinese government is helping the Bangladeshi government in the country's development.
