Rare sundog rises over buildings in St Petersburg, Russia
A rare sundog optical phenomenon was seen rising above buildings in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Saturday morning, November 18.
A sundog, also known as a mock sun or parhelion, consists of a bright spot to one or both sides of the sun. Two sundogs often flank the sun within a 22 degrees halo.
They are caused by the refraction of sunlight by ice crystals in the atmosphere. As the sun's light passes through the ice crystals, it is bent and split into its constituent colors.
