1 lakh diyas, 70 envoys at Dev Deepavali event in Varanasi in Northern India
Varanasi and its areas (ghat) shone brightly in the light of more than million Dias (oil lamps) to celebrate Dev Deepawali on November 27 (Monday).
The festival is celebrated in Kartik Purnima, Uttar Pradesh, every year and is attended by visitors from different parts of the country and abroad. The 8-kilometre stretch of Ghat was adorned with a million lights, while oil lamps were used throughout the city to light it up beautifully for the festival. As part of an effort to make the event big, a laser show was organised for the occasion, along with 'eco-friendly' fireworks. Dev Deepawali is celebrated 15 days after Diwali on Kartik Purnima. On this occasion, thousands of believers come to Varanasi to pray and swim in the Ganges. Lights are lit in all major temples, ponds and lakes in Varanasi.
The festival of Dev Deepawali is celebrated in Banaras 15 days after Grand Diwali. After worshipping the Gods and Goddesses on this day, bathing in the river, a lamp is floated in the Ganges river. It is believed that by doing so, one gets the blessings of all the gods. Dewali and Deepawali are some of the biggest Hindu religious festivals and are celebrated all around the world with oil lamps, religious mosaics, flower petals, fireworks and lights.
