Desperation intensifies in Gaza after the UN fails to vote on ceasefire resolution

An urgent humanitarian cease-fire was demanded by the UN Security Council on Friday, but it was not passed. United Arab Emirates' text was vetoed by the United States, one of five permanent council members. Nine of the 15 member nations were required to support the resolution, with no vetoes, for it to be approved. Thirteen members voted in favour, with Washington vetoing and the United Kingdom abstaining.
Israel would have been forced to cease all strikes against alleged Hamas targets if the draft had passed, at a time when the IDF is ramping up its ground offensive in southern Gaza. More than 17,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
