Baby rescued with zip line during Tropical Storm Jelawat in the Philippines

A baby was rescued by firefighters using a zip line to cross floods caused by Tropical Storm Jelawat in the Philippines.

Footage shows emergency responders carrying the infant across a the wire as torrents of muddy water raged below in Caraga Town, Davao Oriental province, on December 18.

A Bureau of Fire Protection spokesman said: 'An infant was rescued by BFP responders amidst the raging drift of water in one of the affected areas of Sitio Mailum, Caraga, Davao Oriental. Using the traverse line, our BFP elements successfully transported the baby which was then received by other rescuers waiting at the riverbank.'

Jelawat made landfall in Manay Town, Davao Oriental in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao at 9:30 am local time on December 18, state weather agency PAGASA said.

The storm has weakened into a low-pressure area, but displaced thousands after bringing heavy rain.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said some 82,703 people were evacuated as floods submerged their homes. One person was injured, while another was missing. There were no reports of casualties so far.
